2019 in Retrospect (Q&A on fashion and blogging)

Chelsey, NYC

Hey guys!! Happy 2020! I hope everyone is having a great start to the new year/decade. It’s crazy how 2019 has come and gone just like that. Looking back now, I feel like my 2019 has been both steady and rushed. Does that even make sense? I talked about why I consider 2019 as my ‘slow down year’ in my previous post in terms of traveling and life in general. And while that is true, at the same time it also felt rushed because of the impulsive decisions I made throughout the year. I am guilty of always wanting to do more and constantly feeling that I’m not doing enough or making the most out of every opportunity that comes my way. So for this year, one of my resolutions is to soak up each moment and just live life as it happens. Of course I still have my short and long term goals but I will go through them one at a time with careful consideration and try my best not to act in haste.

As I’ve said in one of my posts on Instagram, 2019 was an okay year for me. Okay meaning it was not as eventful as 2018 nor as exciting as 2017. But that’s not to say 2019 wasn’t a good year. It was good in its own way—chill and steady. I probably just got used to traveling a lot the past 2 years or so that 2019 made me feel like I wasn’t maximizing my time. Oh well, I overthink everything, don’t I? lol

So anywaaay, let’s move on! If this is your first time on my blog, welcome! I’m Shayne and I blog about my personal style, life updates and travels. Well, actually, I don’t talk much about my trips, but I do share a lot of photos! That’s another thing on my blog bucket list for this year—to talk more about my experiences when traveling. I’ve always thought that it would be a lot for me to handle if I have to take photos, take note of every activity while savoring the moment and enjoying the trip at the same time. But maybe I’m just not doing it the right way so I’ll try to do better in my upcoming trips!

For my first post of the decade (whoa!), I decided I’ll do a little Q&A. I love a good Q&A and also, it would help me introduce myself better to you as I’m not very good in doing that myself. lol Soooo, if you’re following me on Instagram you would know that in my latest post, I asked my friends and followers to ask a question or two which I would answer in a blog post. And I got quite a number of responses which made me so happy! If you’re one of those who sent in questions, thank you so much for taking the time! I won’t be able to answer all the questions here so I’ll post some on my stories as well! Okay, Imma start the ball rolling!

Q: Where are you from and what’s your favorite thing to do, place to go and to eat? Do you have siblings? What are you working towards? Xo!! -@samantha_cianci

A: First of all, wow girl! Great questions! I am originally from Manila, Philippines. I moved to the US 2 and a half years ago and currently I live in Northwest Minnesota. My favorite thing to do is to take naps. lol kidding! (I’m such a sleepyhead)  I love to travel, hangout at coffee shops and take pictures/make content. Place to go…anywhere! You can literally take me anywhere haha foodwise, my absolute favorite cuisine is Korean! I have an older sister but sadly, she’s not with us anymore. And to answer that last question..oh my gosh, I feel like I’m working towards so many things! But basically, I am trying my hand at a few things like photography, creating content, blogging, etc to figure out which one I would like to do as a side hustle. I’ve been blogging for more than 5 years now but I’ve never really tried exploring the monetization part of it so this time I would like to look more into that. Business aside, I am really just trying to better myself in every way I can. 🙂

Q: What do you like most about yourself? -@siddharth.chawda2018

A: Hmmm.. I guess I like that I’m passionate about life. I love going on adventures, trying new things and making friends. A lot of times I can be an introvert though. I’m not good at small talks and usually won’t start a conversation but once I warm up to you, you’ll get sick of me talking all the time! LOL

Q: Where did you grow up?! -@millifox

A: I was born and raised in Manila, Philippines ♥

Q: What made you want to start blogging? -@corihannablog

A: Okay, this is the full story on how I got into blogging. In 2011, I got into an accident that caused me to take a break from work for 2 months. One day I got bored at home that I decided to look up fashion blogs. My intention at the time was to search for blogs talking about the latest trends, fashion shows, kinda like a fashion forecast website. But to my surprise, someone’s blog came up on the search results. I got curious what the blog was about because the blogger seemed to be just an ordinary girl like me who happens to take pictures of her daily outfits and posts them on her blog. I enjoyed reading her blog so much that it inspired me to make my own. Back then Instagram was just starting so aside from my blog, I also posted my outfits on Lookbook and Chictopia. Oh my gosh..those were the days!! So yeah, simply put, I decided to start a blog because I got inspired and I thought it was cool to have my own space where I could document my personal style.

Q: What is your favorite part of blogging this far?!♥ -@katestaste

A: Favorite part is that I get to document and share my interests and passions. When I started my blog it was for the sole reason of having this little space online that I could call my own; a place where I could talk about anything I want. Through the years, I’ve had people reach out to me saying how much they enjoyed reading my blog and following along. Some even asked why I didn’t blog as much as I used to anymore and encouraged me to keep going. Somehow, my blog made an impact and gave inspiration to these people. This is why I know I will keep doing what I’m doing even if I’ll only get to inspire 1 person (but of course I want to inspire more people! lol)

Q: How do you set aside time to take pictures? Do you do bulk outfits all in one day? -@hannahkemartin

A: I work Mondays-Fridays (plus 1 weekend/month) so only time for me to make content is usually on weekends. As much as I want to take several outfit photos in a day, it doesn’t happen most of the time. I really need to work on this and try to shoot probably 3-5 outfits in one weekend. That’s kinda ambitious but I’m just setting the bar high! haha So at most that I’ve done in a day so far is 2 outfits + 2 product shoots.

Q: How to keep yourself motivated? -@sleepylasss

A: Girl, I like your IG handle! I am a sleepy lass too lol! For motivation, I think you can’t really keep yourself motivated at all times. Some days I wake up so inspired I feel like I could conquer the world and there are days that I just don’t feel doing anything. I guess my advice would be to keep coming back to your WHY— why you’re doing what you’re doing and why you started it in the first place. You have to have a strong foundation. Write it down and post on your wall if you must. And if you haven’t found your WHY yet, that’s okay. Keep looking, it will come to you at the right time. ♥

Q: What is your influence for your nice outfits? ♥♥ -@joannemariecronin

Who are your style icons? -@alexandriaariana

A: Now that I’ve thought about it, I don’t think I have a specific style icon. I actually can’t remember how I started dressing up the way that I do now. I guess it’s a mix of inspiration from people I see online and through traveling. Like, for example, I lived in South Korea for 4 months so there was a time when I was so into Korean fashion I wore socks + sneakers + skirt/shorts alll the time. lol Also when I was younger, crop top + high waisted shorts was my jam because it was so hot and humid in the Philippines I didn’t feel like wearing pants, haha! I’ve tried different styles through the years so I know by now which ones work/ don’t work for me.

Q: Where do you shop?? Love your style ♥ -@thepetitecliche

Where’s your favorite place to shop? If you had unlimited funds, what clothing item would you buy? -@frugalfinds

A: Aww, thanks @thepetitecliche! I think I have too many favorites! lol I like shopping at Urban Outfitters, Express, H&M and of course, Target and Amazon! haha If I had all the money in the world, I would splurge on shoes or purses instead of clothing so probably designer brands like Chanel, YSL, Gucci. But really, even if I had a ton of money I don’t think I’ll spend it on luxury items. I’ll save it for investment. haha

Q: I love to know how fellow bloggers plan their blogs and time! -@rosy.melissa

A: To be honest, I’d love to know about this too! Haha I’m not the best person to answer this because I struggle with time management as well. Blogging takes so much time and effort! Right now I usually allot 2-3 weeknights for 1 post just because I have limited time on weekdays. I don’t usually write blog posts on weekends because that’s when I shoot content. I’m still figuring it out but so far this has been my schedule.

Okay the last set of questions I’m gonna answer here is about outfit/style. There are still a few questions I haven’t answered but I don’t want to make this post too long, so I’ll just answer the rest on my stories!

A: Like most people I get inspiration from the internet (usually Pinterest or Instagram) especially when I first started blogging. Nowadays, I already know my style so ideas come to me naturally most of the time.

Q: What’s a brand you want to collaborate with? -@food.with.hilary

A: Oh my gosh…that’s the dream! Right off the top of my head, I’d say Urban Outfitters, H&M or Express! And Target! I mean, who doesn’t like Target, right??

Q: What’s your favorite every day outfit? -@travel.share.inspire and @starchandwhimsy

What is your go-to color to wear? -@keepfashion_weird

A: I don’t dress up everyday as I am a medical professional so I wear scrub suits at work. But my go-to outfit is basic top + nice pair of jeans. I like throwing in neutrals especially on lazy days.

Q: What’s your favorite piece in your closet? -@on.the.rowe

A: Right now it would be my pair of mom jeans from AE! And the sweaters I recently got from Nasty Gal. Also my hoop earrings from Amazon. Lol So many!

Q: Do you do your shopping online or in person? -@bombaeinnewyork

A: Both! These days though I do more shopping online because I can’t always go to the mall or downtown. Back when I was living in Manila, I used to shop more in person because I work literally right in the middle of the city. That’s why I feel like I shopped way more often before than I do now! haha

Q: What is your favorite accessory? What is a clothing staple you think everyone should have in their closet? How many pairs of shoes do you own? -@imtina

A: I like earrings cause they’re so fun to style but I wear necklaces more often. Staple clothing I think we could all agree that everyone needs a nice pair of jeans and an LBD (little black dress)! Oh my gosh.. pairs of shoes! Not counting those I left in Manila, right now I have about 28! lol How did that happen…

I think I have to end this post here. Haha You are probably getting so bored by now! Again, thanks so much for all the questions! I had fun reading and answering all of them! And oh btw, all pictures in this post are from my trip to New York last Oct 2019. NYC is my dream place to go and now also my absolute favorite city! (I think there was a question about my favorite place to travel to, so yeah that’s the answer. haha)
