2018 Life Update

Spring has finally sprung (or at least that’s what I would like to believe, lol) and I couldn’t be more excited. Feels like it’s been winter here forever! I’m so tired of the cold and snow, but at the same time, I’m also tired of complaining. lol I woke up one morning in April, expecting sunshine and warmth (cause it’s supposed to be spring already!), but all I saw was snow. Snow storm in April. I got to this point wherein I’m like, “you know what? you can snow all you want and I won’t be bothered anymore!” Lol It’s so frustrating but that’s Mother Nature giving us a wake up call. That’s Global Warming at its finest.

And while I can’t go out and enjoy the sun yet, I take refuge in these photos I took a while back during my trip to California. Oh, how I miss California and its perfect weather! I will be sharing some pics from LA in this blog post as I talk about what I’ve been up to lately. Not sure if you’ll find it interesting though, but I want to do it for myself cause I want to be constantly reminded of the things that make me happy and grateful every single day.

So, first on the list (I actually made a list) is learning to cook/make food. If you follow me on Instagram, you probably have noticed the changes I made to my diet recently. I’ve been trying to eat better/ healthy whenever I can and it all started when I stopped eating rice months ago. Just to clear things out, I didn’t do it to lose weight. I can’t really remember the reason why I did it but I think I was just more of curious to know the difference it can make. I realized I still feel full after each meal even though I just had broccoli, spinach and some meat (contrary to what most Filipinos think. I understand. Rice is life for us! Lol) I also cut down my sugar intake, trying my best not to exceed 25 g of sugar in a day. I do indoor cycling (will talk about this too!) and I usually will have a banana 30-45 mins before the class as a quick source of energy and a banana alone already has 14 g of sugar! Crazy, right? I stay away from processed foods as much as possible, which is not easy cause I love chips a lot! Recently, I tried a good brand of chips which is organic, grain-free, gluten-free and used avocado oil instead of vegetable oil (which can be toxic so if you guys are using this, I recommend to swap it out for extra virgin olive oil). I think I can have it once in a while or when I’m having pms and can’t control my cravings. Also, I usually eat whole foods and try my best to follow Paleo-inspired recipes (I’m still learning!). And while I can’t say goodbye forever to dairy and bread just yet, I definitely bade farewell to soda and alcoholic drinks. So, no more Sprite and soju (the Korean alcoholic drink that I used to have occasionally when I was in South Korea)! Haha All these I do cause they make me feel better. And as a bonus, I also lost some weight. If you want to lose weight, not eating rice would definitely help but it could be hard. I was never a big fan of rice even when I was still back home in the PH so it’s probably easier for me. I didn’t have any cravings whatsoever.
I can keep talking about my diet/eating healthy but I’m kinda rushing this blog post cause I still have a trip to plan! If you want to know more or have any questions, you can just leave a comment here, email me or slide into my dm’s on Instagram. I’m not a pro, lol. I’m still learning/trying out different things but I could share my opinion and help you get started! And oh, before I move on to the next topic, I just want to add that I get my beef and chicken from Butcher Box. They got grass fed beef, free range chicken and heritage pork. Now the reason why I prefer to get my meat from them is another long story, so maybe it’s better if you’ll just check them out if you’re interested.
Okay, moving on, let’s talk about indoor cycling/spinning. I signed up for a 45-min spin/strength class and have been doing it twice to thrice a week for three months now. So far, I am enjoying it. I’ve heard about negative effects of indoor cycling to some people (like how it can be too intense) but all I can say is, it just depends on the person. Each person is different so you just have to find the workout that works well for you. Also I think any workout can be intense (and can hurt you if you don’t do it properly), so it’s really just up to you. Listen to your body and don’t push yourself too hard you hurt yourself. The point here is to get fit and healthy, not hurt and sick, so I think as long as you’re putting in the work and effort in your routines, you’re good! You can feel it when your routines are getting easier, that’s when you take it to the next level. Work on your own pace and eventually you’ll get better at it! We do strength exercises (circuit training, weights, core and leg routines) after spin class and I discovered that my arms don’t have much muscle strength , so that’s one thing I definitely need to work on! I struggle with 30 lb bench press. So weak, I know! Lol

Eating better and working out definitely make me feel good about myself. I’ve tried doing a couple weight loss diets in the past and worked out occasionally (usually only when there’s an upcoming beach trip, lol), but I was never committed. I felt like I was depriving myself of my favorite snacks and that I couldn’t be bothered with exerting too much effort on working out. You see, this is why diets don’t work. We only stop eating certain foods cause we want to lose weight and once we do, we’ll go on cheat days and before we know it, we’re back on snacking/ binge eating again. We’ll gain weight, feel bad about ourselves and then go back to our diet-workout plan. It’s a never ending cycle. I’ve realized the only way to keep the body that you want (if that’s something that can make you happy) is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. After all, if being fit and looking good makes you feel better, then it’s probably worth the change. I didn’t plan on losing weight. I just wanted to get fit and stay active. But when you eat better and workout regularly, weight loss is one of the effects you could get. I am now 9 lbs lighter.
I’ve read this somewhere– “You won’t get fat eating one bad meal and you won’t get lean eating one healthy meal. You are what you repeatedly do. Maintaining a healthy body is a lifestyle, not a destination.” It makes sense to me!

Another thing that has helped me stay at peace and happy is trying to keep everything at a minimum. In other words, I’m trying to be as minimalist as I can possibly be. I absolutely hate clutter. I don’t like seeing so many unused stuff. Part of the reason why I stopped fashion blogging is because I wasn’t happy anymore with the amount of clothes, shoes and accessories I’ve accumulated over time. I used to go to every sale and bazaar/flea market when I was younger and it would make me happy. But after I wore the clothes, took pictures and all, I usually wouldn’t wear them again. I think I only wore about half of my clothes once. When I moved here, I left so much stuff in the PH that my mom now is having a hard time sorting through them.  She’ll have a garage sale at home sometime soon and she was telling me how my clothes still look good as new. Don’t get me wrong, I still shop. But only if there’s a need to. I think the last time I shopped a lot was during Thanksgiving last year cause it was my first Black Friday experience and I took the chance to shop for things that I sent to my parents (they got my first ever Balikbayan Box last week! #ofwcertified ). Now I understand the saying “Less is More”. I appreciate every thing that I have right now cause I find them all essential to me. Less clutter, less stress, happier life. If living a minimalist life is something you’re interested in, I would recommend reading the book Minimalism: Live a Meaningful Life by Joshua Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus. I really enjoyed this book, definitely one of my favorites!

I also noticed that since I don’t shop a lot now, I am saving more money which means more budget for my travels. I chose to prioritize traveling over shopping simply because it makes me happy and it’s good for the soul. I also see it as an opportunity to visit friends and relatives in different parts of the country. I’ve come to realize that I’m happiest when I’m with the people I love and when I give back to them.

Oh wow, didn’t expect this post to be this long. Are you guys still with me?  Just a few more things before I end this. lol

I am actually low-key panicking cause I still haven’t finished the itinerary for my upcoming trip. I’m flying out Thursday morning so I might pull an all-nighter just to finish everything! I like keeping things organized and it stresses me a lot when things don’t go as planned. Now that I live on my own, I deal with just about anything by myself that sometimes it can get pretty overwhelming. Adulting is no joke, especially if you live thousand miles away from home! Keeping a planner has helped me in organizing my thoughts. I prefer the old school way of writing down my schedule rather than typing a note on my phone. Shout out to my good friend, Laurice , for sending me a Starbucks planner all the way from the PH! It’s a big help!

How are you liking the photos? I’ve always dreamed of visiting LA but to my surprise, it didn’t turn out as my favorite city in California. It’s probably cause I didn’t have enough time to explore the city and was rushing to see so many places within a short span of time. I’m going to give myself another chance to see and experience more of LA sometime in the near future. haha

I remember it was 102 degrees when I took these pictures. It almost felt like I was back in the Philippines but I didn’t seem to mind! I haven’t experienced what winter feels like in Minnesota yet at that time so that’s probably why. Now that I’ve been through -45 degrees, I’m curious to know how I would feel come summertime!

I’m getting sleepy now but I must finish this!   I forgot to mention on the diet part how I love spinach sooo much! I had issues with my digestion lately and only spinach was able to resolve it. I’m still not sure what could have caused my problem. I’m guessing it could be either dairy or meat.  I can’t seem to cut out dairy for good cause I like milk and cheese a lot.  So, that led me to discover another favorite which is almond milk! I buy the one that is dairy and lactose-free, gluten-free, soy-free and unsweetened.

This blog post is taking forever. Lol Writing a post while being on call is probably not the best idea. I got called in so I had to stop. Now I lost my train of thought.   Speaking of thoughts, I signed up for a 6-session yoga class. I’ve already done two sessions and it’s going well so far. The first one wasn’t that good, though. I felt kinda sick after. But the second one was so different. I felt so relaxed after and my breathing was better, which is very important in yoga.

My mind is always wandering. I was told that meditation can help with this which is why I decided to try yoga. I’m such an over-thinker that I over analyze even the smallest things, especially when I’m having pms (lol, I know many can relate!). Whenever I get like this, I would pray. It instantly calms me down. I know we are all different when it comes to faith, but praying is one thing that has helped me keep my sanity (okay, it’s not like I’m about to go insane here. It’s an exaggeration but you get what I mean!). It works every time. I’d say if you feel troubled or helpless, try praying or meditation. Find something that would take you in a quiet and safe place where all your troubles seem so small cause the truth is, they are. You are bigger than your worries. With faith, courage and determination, you can overcome anything! Sounds cliche but it’s true. We got this, YOU got this!
I’m about to end this post in a little bit (lol, finally!) but before that can we stop for a while and admire this beautiful view? I love sunsets and sunrises. I’m slowly turning into a morning person cause I wake up at 5-5:30 am on weekdays to go to the gym, and one of the things that I love about it is I get to see sunrise. And last week, when I got out of yoga, I was able to catch a sunset. Isn’t that awesome? It’s amazing how simple things are sometimes the most extraordinary things.

Last set of photos taken at one of the famous tourist/Instagram spots in LA. This place doesn’t need an introduction. I’m sure most, if not all, of you guys have seen this on Instagram. This was my last stop for the day and I was so exhausted and moody. lol But as they say, you gotta do it for the ‘gram!

Okay, so that’s about it! I hope you enjoyed reading through this post or, if not, at least browsing through the photos. Time to work on another itinerary. Any guesses where I’m heading to in a few days? This place has always been on top of my must-visit list cause I’m such a big city girl. Hopefully the experience won’t disappoint! Til my next post!
